20-Year-Old Killed After Shooting at Highway Patrol Officers

SOUTH RALEIGH, NC – On Friday, a State Highway Patrol trooper shot and killed 20-year-old Jaylen Latrelle Routt during an exchange of gunfire. Routt, a resident of Fayetteville, was allegedly speeding in Johnston County and did not pull over for officers. He was clocked at 101 mph in a 70 mph zone.

The high-speed chase ended when Routt crashed his vehicle into a grassy lot near the intersection of East and Branch streets in a residential area of downtown Raleigh. The incident concluded off of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard.

Master Trooper Harrison Nazal of Johnston County returned fire after Routt allegedly shot at officers. Routt was taken to WakeMed hospital, where he died from his injuries. Nazal is currently on administrative duty while the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the incident.

By 9 a.m. on Friday, the scene had been cleared. The State Bureau of Investigation is now in charge of reviewing the incident and will provide updates as the investigation progresses.
