HS WRESTLING: Jackson Memorial Earns Group 4 Central Title With Win Over Long Branch

The top-seeded Jackson Memorial High School wrestling team trailed by two points after 12 bouts but came back to defeat visiting Long Branch, 28-24, in the final round of the NJSIAA Group 4 Central Tournament on Friday.

Lamont Reid pinned Kyle Johnson at 160 pounds to give the second-seeded Green Wave a 24-22 lead with two bouts remaining. But Justin Martin-Culet won an 8-4 decision over Vincent Vaccaro at 170 pounds and Tanner Kelly won a 5-1 decision over Pete Wersinger at 182 pounds to give the Jaguars the sectional title for the second consecutive year and the eighth time in the past 13 years.

Matt McGowan pinned Isaac Shohet at 126 pounds and Mike Spino won an 8-0 major decision over Carlos Irizarry at 120 pounds for Jackson Memorial. The Jaguars also won six bouts by decision.

Reid and John Tomlinson had pins for Long Branch, which also won four bouts by decision.

Jackson Memorial will face Group 4 South champion Clearview Regional High School in the state semifinals Sunday in Toms River.
