Holy Redeemer HomeCare and Hospice announced that it will host a free volunteer training program for individuals who are interested in providing support to local hospice patients and their families.
The comprehensive six-week training program will cover the medical, psychological and spiritual aspects of hospice volunteering. Through these classes, participants will learn about the ins and outs of hospice services and how to care for patients with confidence.
“It takes a special, compassionate person to become a hospice volunteer,” said Spiro Ballas, Holy Redeemer Hospice’s Volunteer Coordinator for Ocean County. “Part of their role is to reflect Holy Redeemer’s underlying mission to care, comfort and heal by working with the professional hospice team to provide companionship and support for patients as well as their families.”
Hospice volunteers typically visit patients in their homes or nursing facilities once a week for two to three hours. They provide both practical and emotional support to patients and their loved ones, ranging from giving a caregiver respite and assisting with weekly errands to providing companionship and bereavement support. Additionally, administrative volunteers help with typing, mailings, filing and other office necessities.
“Many of our volunteers tell us that supporting our patients and their families is a truly fulfilling and rewarding experience,” said Ballas. “Our volunteers make a real difference in the lives of patients and families, and very often the reverse is true, as well.”
The training program, beginning in early February, will include both afternoon and evening sessions to accommodate varying schedules. Registration for the program will close on January 28, 2019.
