Toms River Council Could Overturn Public’s Opposition to Budget in Toms River Fire Election This Week

TOMS RIVER-There’s an old saying about elections, they have consequences.  Whether that means staying home during an election or coming out in force to support or oppose a candidate or referendum in an election, the results of an election are usually final.

That is, except in the case of fire budgets in the State of New Jersey.  It’s one of the few budgets residents still vote on in Ocean County since most school districts opted out of the school budget vote several years ago.

On Tuesday, the township council of Toms River will allow fire commissioners from Fire District No. 2 to speak before the governing body in an attempt to lobby the council into overturning the voter’s decision to reject the district’s $3.41 million budget, which came in $23,000 less than the 2019 budget but saw a 1 cent increase in the tax levy per $100 of assessed property.
