Phil Murphy’s One-Two Toll Hike, Gas Hike Punch Begins Today

Buckle up New Jersey, because New Jersey just started digging deeper into your pockets.  Your Monday morning commute is going to cost you a lot more than your last trip to the office on Friday.  That’s because the first of two Phil Murphy transportation hikes went into effect Sunday.   In May, Murphy approved a 36% toll hike on the New Jersey Turnpike and a 27% increase on the Garden State Parkway.

In just a few weeks, the New Jersey gasoline tax is going to rise another 9%. That’s because the state needs to fund a 10 year, $24 billion improvement program for New Jersey Transit and other projects in the state.

The gas tax hike translates to about a 22% increase.

On the Garden State Parkway, tolls have risen from 75 cents to 95 cents.  Tolls at parkway exits will increase rom 50 cents to 65 cents and in some ares, from $1.50 to $1.90.

That’s not all, starting in 2022, the New Jersey Turnpike can ratchet up tolls 3% annually.

Heading to Atlantic City on the Atlantic City Expressway? Tolls there will go from $3 to $4.25 and from 75 cents to $1.25 elsewhere on the expressway.
