Man Drowned Trying to Rescue His Son at Jersey Shore

LAVALETTE, NJ – A man drowned in the Atlantic Ocean off the beach of Lavalette on Monday.  Authorities say the man was trying to rescue his son from a powerful rip current.  Up and down the Jersey Shore, rough water and rip currents were the underlying cause for at least a dozen rescues by emergency personnel.   High winds of 10 to 15 knots will continue today with wind gusts up to 25 knots.  Wind swells today are expected to be five to eight feet at 14-second intervals before calming slightly this evening.
