Fully vaccinated New York Yankees coach tests positive for COVID-19

The New York Yankees as a team now have an 85% vaccination rate, allowing the team to shed their facemasks in the dugout during games. But today, Yankees third base coach Phil Nevin tested positive for the virus before their two-week-long road trip that is scheduled to start tonight in Tampa Bay.

“We have a breakthrough positive involving 3B Coach Phil Nevin, who is fully vaccinated. He is currently under quarantine protocol in Tampa. Under Major League Baseball’s guidance and advice, and with its assistance, additional testing and contact tracing are ongoing,” the Yankees said in a statement.

Yankees manager Bob Boone said the Yankees expect to play their game tonight in Tampa.

Nevin played Major League Baseball from 1995 until his retirement in 2006, playing for the Astros, Tigers, Angels, Padres, Twins and Cubs.
