Mommy Dearest: Woman charged for abusing child with metal spatula

MAYS LANDING, NJ – A Galloway Township woman has been charged in the assault of a nine-year-old girl, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner announced.

On May 12, 2021, Stephanie Gregory, 56, was charged with 2 counts of second-degree Aggravated Assault and 6 counts of second-degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child whom she was the legal guardian of, as well as the child’s 2 siblings. Gregory is also charged with one count of third-degree Possession of a Controlled Dangerous Substance, heroin.

The charges stem from Gregory’s failure to properly feed the 9 year old female victim and beat the child repeatedly with a metal spatula leading to open wounds and welts on the child’s body.

Upon the 9 year-old victim being removed from the home by DCP&P, she was extremely emaciated and could barely walk. She was taken to the hospital and was admitted for one week.

This investigation and subsequent arrest of Gregory was collaborative effort by the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit and the Atlantic County SWAT Team. Gregory is currently detained at the Atlantic County Justice Facility, pending a detention hearing. Assistant Prosecutor Erika Halayko represents the state in the matter.
