BAYONNE, NJ – A statue has been erected for World War II Medal of Honor recipient Stephen R. Gregg, Sr. Lt. Gregg served in the 143rd infantry regiment during World War II. On August 27, 1944, Gregg was captured by German soldiers, but managed to escape.
He returned to his captors later to bring them a fight and provided covering fire for medics to rescue wounded soldiers.
After learning that his unit’s motor section was captured by the Germans and their ordinance was now being directed at his own soldiers, Gregg mounted an attack on the position, retaking it from the Germans. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. Gregg passed away on February 4th, 2005.
