Probationary firefighters face their fears, build confidence in pier jump

DEERFIELD BEACH, FL – Probationary firefighters in recruit training in Deerfield Beach took a leap of faith, diving 25 feet off a pier into the water below. The exercise is not only part of their rite of passage, but a huge confidence builder for the men and women who will soon be part of the Broward County Fire Rescue team.

“Sometimes, you just have to take a leap of faith! For the 11 members of the Probationary Firefighter/Paramedic Recruit Class 21-02, that means voluntarily jumping off the Deerfield Beach Pier 25 feet below into the water. Not only is the exercise a massive confidence booster, but it also helps them overcome a fear of heights, water and their capabilities. And it’s a whole lot of fun,” the BCSO said in a statement today.
