Columbus police charge man already in custody with August murder

Columbus, OH – Detectives have filed a warrant charging 20-year-old Zaire Jones with Murder for causing 34-year-old Arthur Coon’s death. Jones is currently incarcerated on unrelated charges in the Franklin County Jail and was served with this warrant there.

On Saturday, August 21, 2021, at 11:05PM, Columbus Police Officers were called to the 1400 block of Hildreth Ave. on a report of a shooting. On arrival, officers found 34-year-old Arthur Coons suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. CFD Medic 8 responded and pronounced Coons deceased at 11:24PM.

Just prior to the shooting there was a fight in front of this location. Detectives are attempting to determine who was involved and what the fight was about. This fight likely led to the shooting and the participants likely witnessed the shooting.

This is the city’s 135th homicide in 2021. Detective Niederkohr is the lead detective on the case.
