Pedestrian struck and killed by NJ Transit bus hit and run in Lakewood

Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced that on January 3, 2022, at approximately 9:45 p.m., Officers from the Lakewood Township Police Department responded to the entrance of the New Jersey Transit Bus Terminal on Route 88 in Lakewood in response to a report that a pedestrian had been struck by a motor vehicle.

Responding Officers found a 32 year-old male victim lying by the side of the road. The victim was transported to Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus, in Lakewood, where he was pronounced deceased. Subsequent investigation determined that the victim was struck by a New Jersey Transit bus.

The bus and the operator of the bus were eventually located in Howell Township later in the evening of January 3, 2022.

“The operator of the bus has been cooperative and this is an active and ongoing investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicular Homicide Unit, Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Unit, Lakewood Township Police Department, New Jersey Transit Police Department, and Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit. Anyone in possession of information concerning this investigation is urged to contact Detective John Doran of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-929-2027, extension 3524,” Prosecutor Billhimer stated.
