Police find illegal loaded gun after DWI driver crashed into tree

MANAHAWKIN, NJ – Police responding to a single-vehicle crash into a tree in Manahawkin found two suprises. First, the driver was found to be intoxicated and second, he was armed with a loaded 9mm handgun.

On Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at 7:30 PM, the Stafford Township Police Department responded to a motor vehicle accident on Ridge Avenue involving a single vehicle striking a tree.

On-scene investigation led to the arrest of Giancarlo Tomasello, 27 years old of Manahawkin, New Jersey for DWI.

Subsequent investigation led to officers locating a loaded, 9MM handgun in Tomasello’s vehicle.

The vehicle, 2016 Nissan Altima, was towed from the scene. Tomasello was charged with DWI and issued numerous motor vehicle summonses. Furthermore, he was charged with 2nd degree Unlawful Possession of a Handgun, and lodged in Ocean County Jail. The investigating officers were Sgt. Russ Griffin, Ptl. James Sutter, Ptl. Joseph Luna, and Ptl. Chris Smith.
