Potential car buyers robbed of $34,000 in Newark car deal gone bad

NEWARK, NJ – Newark Public Safety Director Brian A. O’Hara requests the public’s help in identifying the below-pictured male in connection with a burglary and theft from an automobile that occurred on Friday, January 14, 2021.

Just after 10 a.m., a male driver and two passengers arrived at the 100 block of Hawthorne Avenue to meet with the seller of a truck he was considering purchasing. After learning that the for-sale truck wouldn’t start, the potential buyer asked for assistance from his two passengers, who initially remained inside his vehicle. The passengers exited the vehicle, leaving it unlocked. When the driver and passengers returned to their vehicle they observed that an iPad Pro and a bag containing $34,000.00 were stolen from the vehicle.

Detectives investigating this incident obtained surveillance footage showing the below-pictured male entering the victim’s vehicle and stealing the items. We seek the public’s help in quickly identifying this suspect as part of the investigation.

Director O’Hara urges anyone with information on the identity of this suspect to call the Division’s 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). All anonymous Crime Stopper tips are kept confidential and could result in a reward.
