PITTSBURGH, PA – ShotSpotter, a high-tech gunshot detection system employed in high crime areas across America led Pittsburgh police to a man who had been shot multiple times.
According to the Allegheny Police Department on Wednesday, “Pittsburgh Police from Zone 2 responded to a ShotSpotter alert for rounds fired in the 2400 block of Bedford Avenue just before 3:30 p.m”
Responding officers, along with members of the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office working in the area – located a 25-year-old male victim down on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
“Medics worked on the victim, but ultimately pronounced him deceased at the scene,” APD said. “One person was detained and transported to police headquarters for questioning.”
“Police rely on the community to call 911 if gunshots are fired, but only 20% of incidents are ever reported on average,” the company said about its product deployed in Pittsburgh. “This creates a situation where police departments have a large data gap that makes it difficult to be able to effectively “serve and protect” when it comes to gun violence. ShotSpotter fills the gap with a network of acoustic sensors that can detect, locate and alert police to nearly all gunshot incidents.”
