Fiery 50 Vehicle Crash During Passing Snow Squall Closes I-81 in Schuylkill County

FOSTER TOWNSHIP, PA – A massive multi-car crash forced the closure of Interstate 81 after dozens of vehicles crashed into each other during a pileup as a passing snow squall reduced visibility and made for slick road conditions.

Multiple tractor-trailers were involved in the crash and several caught fire.

“Foster Twp: Multiple vehicle pileup crash on I-81 N in the area of MM 116 due to a snow squall,” the Pennsylvania State Police Department said in a statement. “Approx. 50-60 vehicles involved w/ multiple injuries. A large fire involving several vehicles continues to burn. PSP cannot confirm fatalities at this time.
