Caught on Camera: Toms River Car Thief Realizes Owner is in the Car and Runs

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Car thieves from North Jersey and other urban areas have been targeting vehicles in Toms River and Ocean County for months, but on Wednesday, one was caught on camera.

Police today released home security video footage of the failed attempt to steal a silver Audi parked in front of a home on Todd Road.

“On Wednesday afternoon, suspects in a silver Audi (believed to be stolen out of Clifton) attempted to steal a vehicle on Todd Road,” the Toms River Police Department said. “The vehicle’s owner was inside the car at the time and startled the suspect who then fled the area. Immediately after, the same suspects made attempts in Wall Twp.”

Police said the vehicle was most likely targeted due to the position of the mirrors, indicating it was unlocked. The department added, New Jersey is experiencing a surge in auto thefts. There have been over 700 reported vehicle thefts in NJ in 2022.
