UTICA, NY – A 17-year-old Utica teenager was charged for criminal possession of a weapon and traffic violations after being stopped by police during a routine stop.

“On April 14, 2022 at approximately 1:30AM officers with the Crime Prevention Unit attempted to stop three parties on Noyes St near Genesee St for a NYSV&TL violation. As the officers approached the males, two fled in different directions and the officers gave chase,” the Utica Police Department said. “After a brief foot pursuit, they were able to detain one individual and while doing so located a loaded .22 caliber handgun on his person.”

During the pursuit of the second male, they located a jacket that he had discarded and while checking the jacket they located another loaded .22 caliber handgun in the pocket. This party was not apprehended and an investigation into his identity is still on-going

Upon transporting the apprehended male to the Utica Police Department, it was learned that he was 17 years of age.

Following arraignment, he was released to the care of a guardian with domicile restrictions.
