CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – When they saw smoke coming from a home in CENTRAL Islip, a town employee and a police officer sprung into action and saved two dogs trapped inside.
According to the Suffolk County Police Department, the two dogs were rescued from a burning Central Islip home on Monday morning thanks to heads-up actions by a Suffolk County Police officer and a Town of Islip employee.
Police said Tim Alver, a Town of Islip employee who was replacing a stop sign at the corner of Wilson Boulevard and Sycamore Street, noticed smoke emanating from a nearby home and ran to the house to attempt to make contact with the occupants.
“After encountering locked doors and no response, Alver flagged down a passing motorist who called 911,” police said. “Upon arrival, Third Precinct Officer Sergio Rivera kicked in a rear door after hearing dogs barking inside and rescued the homeowner’s two dogs.”
A Probationary Police Officer, John Iaccino, who graduated from the academy less than two weeks ago, then entered the home to ensure there were no other occupants inside. Three chickens were also rescued from the home during the incident.
