Philadelphia Woman Struck and Killed in Crash in Delaware City

DELAWARE CITY, DE – A Philadelphia woman who was crossing South Dupont Highway near the intersection of Mid-County Drive shortly after midnight Sunday morning was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.

The Delaware State Police said at approximately 12:31 a.m.; a white 2014 Chevrolet Cruze was traveling northbound on South Dupont Highway just north of the intersection at Mid-County Drive.

“At this time, a 37-year-old female pedestrian from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was crossing South Dupont Highway from west to east and entered into the path of the Cruze. As a result, the right front of the Cruze struck the pedestrian in the roadway,” the Delaware State Police reported later in the day on Sunday. “Both the operator, a 24-year-old woman from Wilmington, DE, and the passenger, a 24-year-old woman from Middletown, DE, were properly restrained.

Police reported that neither individual requested medical attention at the scene. The female pedestrian was not carrying any lighting device and was not utilizing a crosswalk at the time of the incident.

“She sustained critical injuries and was transported via ambulance to an area hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased. Identification of the victim is pending notification to the next-of-kin,” the DSP added. “No other injuries were reported. The roadway was closed for approximately three hours while the collision was investigated and cleared.”
