NEW YORK, NY – Gunfire broke out in Manhattan early Monday morning, resulting in nine people being shot and one dead in Harlem.
At around 12:30 am, New York City police officers responded to a footpath along the FDR Highway below the Madison Avenue Bridge to find five people with gunshot wounds. The shooting took place near East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue.
Those five victims were rushed to the hospital. Police later learned that four other victims were transported to the hospital prior to the department’s arrival.
A 21-year-old male victim did not survive. He was pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital. The other eight victims suffered non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Two women and seven men were shot in the hail of gunfire.
The NYPD today said the victims were having a barbecue in the area when it was suddenly disrupted by gunfire.
New York City Police Commissioner Sewell said New York City police officers are dealing with violent gun crime on a daily basis. Police are asking others in attendance to contact police.
There have been no suspects or motives at this time. A gun was recovered at the scene by police.
