Lakewood Cop Punched Opponent During Softball Game, Victim Required Surgery

BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ – The Lakewood Police Department’s Internal Affairs Unit is investigating after a Lakewood cop was charged for punching an opponent during a softball game. He was charged with aggravated assault by the Berkeley Township Police Department.

According to charges against him, Lakewood Police Officer Patrick Carney, 50, was a pitcher for his team playing a game at Veterans Park in Bayville on June 1st. At around 9:30 pm, his victim Ryan O’Rorke hit the ball hard back at the mound, striking Carney.

The two men began arguing and shoving and that’s when Carney punched O’Rorke. O’Rorke was treated at the hospital for a facial fracture and underwent surgery.
