CENTRAL ISLIP, NY – A wild Lynx that has been roaming the Suffolk County area of Long Island this week has been captured and relocated to an animal sanctuary.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone yesterday joined officials from the Suffolk County Police Department to announce the safe capture of the lynx that was roaming around Suffolk after it was first spotted on July 26.
“Police responded to a 911 call regarding a loose animal on Hawthorne Avenue in Central Islip at approximately 3:30 a.m. yesterday. Third Precinct and Emergency Service Section officers captured the lynx as ES officers tranquilized it,” Bellone said.
The Suffolk County SPCA and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation are investigating.
“Strong Island Animal Rescue League responded and brought the cat, who was not harmed, to the Sweet Briar Nature Center where he has plenty of space to roam…away from the streets of Suffolk,” police said.
