Cop, Former Major League Pitcher Killed in Crash On Way to NYC 9/11 Memorial

NEW YORK, NY – Former Major League Baseball pitcher Anthony Varvaro quit baseball to become a Port Authority police officer after six years in the big leagues. Today, he was killed en route to a NYC September 11th ceremony.

“We are deeply saddened on the passing of former Braves pitcher Anthony Varvaro. Anthony, 37, played parts of six seasons in the majors, including four with Atlanta. He voluntarily retired from MLB in 2016 to become a Port Authority police officer,” the Atlanta Braves said today.

Varvaro was on his way to attend the 9-11 ceremony at the World Trade Center when according to the NYPD, he was killed in a traffic crash.

He played for the Atlanta Braves, Boston Red Sox and Seattle Mariners over a six-year MLB career.

At this time police have not released details regarding the crash.
