A Tulsa man who chased a store clerk with a knife pleaded guilty in federal court, announced U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson.

Jack Charles Welty, 50, pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country. According to the plea agreement, Welty will serve 38 months in federal prison for the crime pending approval from a federal judge at the time of sentencing.

Welty admitted that on July 3, 2022, he assaulted a clerk at a Family Dollar Store located on Utica Street. Welty initially attempted to enter the store before it was opened then waited outside behind a pillar. When the store clerk took a break outside, Welty demanded the clerk give him a cigarette, attempted to cut the victim’s face with a knife and then chased the victim in the parking lot with the knife, threating him. Welty admitted that he only stopped when the clerk threw a cigarette toward him.

The FBI and Tulsa Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney William Rubens is prosecuting the case.
