ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – Police are continuing to investigate after an Atlantic City police officer was struck by a pickup truck while conducting traffic safety at an accident scene on Sunday.

Police reported the crash at around 10:46 pm.

“The Atlantic City Fire Department was dispatched to the outbound lanes of route 30 regarding a vehicle that ran off the roadway and into the marsh,” the Atlantic City Police Department said in a statement on Tuesday. “The occupants of the vehicle were able to exit their car unharmed. Officer Joseph Kelly Jr. was assisting with traffic control and setting up road flares when he was suddenly and unexpectedly struck by a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck driven by 46-year-old Peter Kwiatkowski of Manahawkin.”

Kelly was thrown to the side of the road during the collision and was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Investigators determined Kwiatkowski failed to yield to the numerous emergency vehicles that were at the scene of the crash, before striking Kelly.

He had an outstanding warrant out of Ocean County and was issued multiple traffic citations.
