NEWARK, DE – A 16-year-old male from Newark has been charged for multiple car thefts that took place early Sunday morning, according to police.

On Sunday, at around 7 am, Newark dispatchers received a report of a vehicle that had been stolen from a residence in the 1200-block of Janice Drive as well as a report of a second vehicle that had been stolen from a driveway in the 400-block of Douglas D Alley Drive.

One of the vehicle’s built-in tracking systems was tracking the location of one of these stolen cars as officers investigated the incident.

Using the onboard vehicle tracking system, officers were directed to the area of Keith Street in Newark.

The suspects were stopped from leaving the vehicle by Newark officers.

A 16-year-old juvenile from Wilmington fled on foot and was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit. Police identified the suspect as a 16-year-old juvenile.  Newark Police detained the other suspect at the scene and are investigating his involvement in the incident.

During the course of the search incident prior to his arrest, the juvenile was found in possession of a handgun magazine and ammunition. During a K-9 search conducted by the New Castle County Police Department, a firearm that had been discarded during the foot pursuit was located.

It was determined by officers that credit cards belonging to the Douglas D Alley’s victim had been used early in the morning in the New Castle area following the investigation. In the vehicle stolen from Janice Drive and recovered on Keith Street, property taken from the Douglas D Alley vehicle was found, thereby linking the two vehicle thefts.

A white 2015 BMW 435 with Delaware tag 237285 was stolen from Douglas D Alley Drive and recovered on Keith Street, heavily damaged.
