Teen jogger struck by car, killed in Upper Freehold Township

UPPER FREEHOLD, NJ – A 16-year-old girl was struck and killed by an out-of-control vehicle while she was jogging on Route 539 Friday morning.

The New Jersey State Police confirmed the Allentown High School student was jogging along Route 539 in the area of the Route 537 intersection when a Kia Soul veered off the road and struck her shortly after 7:30 am.

Investigators reported the vehicle crossed over the double yellow line and hit a grass embankment after striking the girl.

Police did not say whether or not any charges were filed. The driver’s and the victim’s identities were withheld. On Saturday, Allentown High School offered grief counseling to students.

State Police Sgt. Philip Curry said the driver remained on the scene after the crash.

“The UFRSD staff at each of our schools was informed of the student’s passing during the school day. Counseling support services were and continue to be available. Members of our Crisis Team have been working with our counselors and other staff members to help students and staff deal with this difficult news,” the District said in a statement.
