Lawmakers in New York have introduced a bill that would amend the state’s civil rights law to protect customers’ privacy regarding toll and fare data stored by vendors and public entities such as EZ-Pass.
Assembly Bill A00517 seeks to limit access to public toll and fare records on file with EZ-Pass and to create rules to regulate when and how those records can be shared. The bill, if passed, will establish a uniform set of rules that determine when the records can be released.
Legislators expressed concerns regarding privacy regarding customer accounts that would reveal financial information, tracking information, and travel details. In the wrong hands, that information can be valuable to those seeking to cause harm.
