Woman shot inside car Axton sports complex; suspect in custody

AXTON, VA – Police have announced the arrest of 46-year-old Calvin Cabiness after he allegedly shot a woman in a domestic dispute in Henry County.

At around 4:27 pm on Tuesday, the Martinsville-Henry County 911 Center received a call from a woman reporting that she had been shot at the Smith River Sports Complex. According to police, the female victim was airlifted to a hospital in Roanoke.

Upon arriving at the scene, deputies found the 35-year-old woman lying on the roadway with several gunshot wounds. She was unresponsive. the deputies and was airlifted to a hospital in Roanoke for treatment.

Police investigating the shooting soon learned that 46-year-old Calvin Cabiness was inside a vehicle with the victim and shot her twice in the leg and chest before fleeing in a Gray Ford Escape.

That vehicle was later found parked on Carver Road, and Cabiness was taken into custody by Martinsville Police officers on Barrows Mill Road at around 7:00 pm without incident.
