Utica Man Arrested After Violent Domestic Incident Involving Handgun and Cocaine

UTICA, NY – Utica Police officers responded to a domestic incident on the 1600 block of Taylor Ave at approximately 9:15 PM on Wednesday. The call reported that a male was repeatedly striking a female and had brandished a handgun during the altercation.

Upon arrival, officers were met by a nude male who became aggressive when questioned. As they tried to speak with the suspect, they heard a female voice coming from the rear of the residence. Officers noticed a loaded, defaced .45 caliber handgun on the floor next to the suspect. After a brief struggle, the male was detained, and a full investigation commenced.

During the investigation, it was revealed that the victim had an order of protection against the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Cheval Gilmore of Utica. A quantity of suspected cocaine belonging to Gilmore was also found inside the residence.

Investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division and Special Investigations Unit were contacted to assist. At the conclusion of the incident, Gilmore was charged with multiple counts, including criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, criminal contempt, and criminal possession of a controlled substance.
