Fingerprint analysis leads Newark police to unsolved armed robbery

NEWARK, NJ – Newark Public Safety Director Fritz G. Fragé has announced the arrest of Keyshawn Jones, 26, of Newark, in connection with an armed robbery that occurred on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.

At approximately 10:40 a.m., a woman inside her parked vehicle in the 200 block of Kerrigan Boulevard was approached by Jones, who demanded her money at gunpoint. When the victim revealed she had no money, Jones took her cell phone before fleeing north on Kerrigan Boulevard.

The cell phone was later tracked and located on 14th Avenue near South 12th Street. Detectives investigating the robbery were able to identify the suspect, Keyshawn Jones, based on a fingerprint lifted from the cell phone, and a warrant was obtained for Jones’s arrest.

On Saturday, Jones was apprehended by Bloomfield Police and subsequently charged by Newark Police with robbery, conspiracy, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and receiving stolen property. The arrest highlights the importance of forensic evidence in solving crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice.
