Police say speed a factor in fatal crash in Cumberland

CUMBERLAND, MD – Detectives with the Cumberland Police Department are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred yesterday, at approximately 1:00 a.m., near East Industrial Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue.

The vehicle involved in the crash left the roadway, struck a utility pole, then struck an unoccupied residence, causing the operator to be ejected from the vehicle.

Emergency Medical Services personnel arrived on the scene and pronounced the operator deceased. The crash remains under investigation by Cumberland Police Department Motor Vehicle Crash Reconstructionist, but speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the accident.

The Cumberland Fire Department, The Allegany County Collapse Team, The Cumberland Street Department, The State Highway Administration, and Utility Services assisted the Cumberland Police Department at the scene.

The identity of the operator is not being released at this time to allow for further notification of the family.
