PEQUANNOCK, NJ – A fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Monday, on Route 23 North in Pequannock Township, has resulted in charges being filed. Angel Carabello-Maldona, 45, of Newark, has been charged with second-degree Reckless Vehicular Homicide following the fatal incident.

The investigation revealed that a 2020 Chevy Traverse was stationary at a red light at the intersection of Route 23 North and Alexander Avenue when it was struck from behind by a garbage truck driven by Carabello-Maldona.

The impact caused the Traverse to catch fire. Despite the valiant efforts of the garbage truck driver, a bystander, and law enforcement officers, the Traverse’s driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Surveillance footage showed Carabello-Maldona was using his cell phone at the time of the crash.

Results of a post-mortem examination are pending.
