Mother-Son Duo Pleads Guilty to 2020 Far Rockaway Shooting

QUEENS, NY – A mother and son, Avita Campbell, 40, and Raymond Jackson, 24, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and other charges in connection with the September 2020 shooting death of a 27-year-old man, Lasaaun Lawrence. The announcement was recently made by Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz.

Jackson and Campbell, both residents of Hook Creek Boulevard, Valley Stream, were seen on video surveillance on September 23, 2020, engaging in a dispute with the victim.

The two were armed, with Campbell wielding a metal pipe and Jackson carrying a handgun. Jackson shot Lawrence multiple times, and Campbell shattered the windshield of Lawrence’s car with the pipe. The two then fled the scene in a white BMW.

Campbell and Jackson were sentenced by Queens Supreme Court Justice Ushir Pandit-Durant to 24 and 22 years in prison, respectively. They will each additionally face five years of post-release supervision.
