East Veterans Highway shut down due to crash

JACKSON TOWNSHIP, NJ – East Veterans Highway was closed Wednesday morning between Butterfly Road and Bennetts Mills Road in Jackson as a result of a serious motor vehicle crash.

Minor injuries were reported, and firefighters arrived on the scene to find an overturned vehicle in the middle of the road just south of Bennetts Mills Road.

Traffic was diverted while crews worked to clear the scene.

The incident happened on East Veterans Highway, which just 10 years ago, was one of the deadliest roads in New Jersey.

After a multi-million roadway safety project coordinated by Mayor Michael Reina, in conjunction with the Jackson Township Police Department and Ocean County Board of Freeholders (now commissioners), fatalities have been significantly reduced.

Those improvements included banking sharp turns, signage, additional traffic lights, speed warning devices, and improved roadway markings and other safety devices.
