Man, child charged for turkey poaching

HANCOCK, MD – Jeffery Lynn McCarty, 57, of Hancock, was issued a total of 16 citations by the Maryland Natural Resources Police for various hunting violations. McCarty and a juvenile were apprehended on April 7, 2023, for illegally hunting turkeys with high-powered rifles during a closed season. They were on a hunting lease in Hancock where they had no permission to hunt.

Further investigation, including a search warrant of McCarty’s cellphone, revealed additional unreported kills. McCarty now faces $6,500 in prepayable fines. The Washington County District Court will set a court date for McCarty. The juvenile involved in the incident was referred to the Department of Juvenile Services for charges.
