BRONX, NY – Sylus McKenzie, a 33-year-old FDNY firefighter, has been recently indicted on charges of grand larceny, identity theft, and official misconduct. According to the Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark and the New York City Department of Investigation Commissioner Jocelyn E. Strauber, McKenzie allegedly stole credit cards from a deceased patient during an emergency call and used them to purchase items worth hundreds of dollars.
McKenzie attended a 911 call at a Manhattan residence on January 11, 2021. The patient was pronounced dead shortly after McKenzie’s arrival, and it was discovered that multiple credit cards were missing from the apartment.
On January 12, 2021, between 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., McKenzie allegedly made and attempted multiple transactions using the stolen cards, totaling purchases of $1,123.21 at a Sunoco Gas Station, a Food Bazaar Supermarket, and at Target for AirPods. McKenzie is due back in court on September 7, 2023.
