Utica, NY – On Thursday, Utica Police responded to a report of a menacing incident at a hotel on North Genesee Street. The incident involved the use of a sword, prompting the dispatch of police units to the scene.

Upon arrival, officers interviewed the victim, who recounted a heated argument that escalated into a physical altercation with an acquaintance. The altercation took a dangerous turn when the suspect brandished a sword, threatening the victim. Fearing for his safety, the victim managed to escape and promptly alerted the authorities.

Law enforcement officers proceeded to the room alleged to have been rented by the suspect and apprehended the suspect, identified as 43-year-old Joseph Arsenault, a resident of Utica. Arsenault was promptly taken into custody and transported to the Utica Police Department for further processing.

Concerned that the weapon used in the incident might still be present, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division sought and obtained a search warrant. A thorough search of the room led to the discovery of a total of 8 swords.

Arsenault has been charged with menacing in the second degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the third degree.
