Deadly shooting put Newark apartment complex on lockdown

NEWARK, NJ – A deadly shooting has occurred on Sunday at an apartment complex in Newark. Local police arrived at The Garden Spires Housing complex located at 175 1st Street following reports of gunfire shortly before noon.

Upon their arrival, officers found an unresponsive male suffering a bullet wound to his head in the left side of the parking lot. Medical professionals declared the victim dead at the scene.

Eyewitnesses reported that an armed male suspect approached the victim near the security booth, fired at point-blank range, then fled the scene. One person has since been detained and a weapon has been recovered.

The Garden Spires complex was placed on lockdown. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the ongoing investigation.
