Newark pair arrested with illegal guns in stolen car

NEWARK, NJ – Late on Thursday, July 6, two residents of Newark, Tijohn Cato, 30, and Samiya Medina, 34, were taken into custody following a vehicle pursuit. Officers first received alerts of a stolen car heading south on Route 1 around 8 p.m. The vehicle was subsequently located near S. Stiles St. Despite officers attempting to intercept, the vehicle continued its journey south on Route 1 until it finally halted at Avenue C’s left turn lane.

Cato and Medina were then instructed to exit the vehicle and were taken into custody. An ensuing investigation led to the discovery of a stolen handgun. Both individuals now face charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun and third-degree receiving stolen property. Medina, released on a summons, awaits her appearance in Superior Court.

Cato is currently detained at the Union County Jail, also awaiting a Superior Court appearance. In response to the incident, Police Chief David Hart expressed satisfaction with the officers’ performance in disarming the streets and affirmed their ongoing commitment to combating violent crime and motor vehicle thefts.
