Gas Station Theft Leads to Police Involved Shooting in Bayonne

HUDSON COUNTY, N.J. – Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced that the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Shooting Response Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place in Bayonne on Thursday.

The Bayonne Police Department received a report of a theft from a gas station on 53rd Street near Avenue E around 6:45 am. Officers located a person of interest in a nearby parking lot, at which point the individual attempted to flee, striking two police vehicles and an unoccupied civilian car. During this encounter, one officer discharged his firearm.

The individual was later found with gunshot wounds near Linden Avenue and Scott Street in Jersey City. He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center and is currently in custody, sustaining injuries not considered life-threatening at this time.
