FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Grand Jury has issued a 37-count indictment against Robert M. Clayton, a 39-year-old local resident, for his alleged involvement in a fatal overdose case that occurred in 2021.

The announcement came in a joint statement delivered last Friday by Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago and Belmar Police Department Chief Tina Scott.

On Saturday, January 2, 2021, Belmar Police Department officers were dispatched to the scene of an overdose in progress. The victim, Jonathan Amato, was found unconscious and not breathing in the front seat of a car. Despite first-aid measures and administration of two doses of Narcan, Amato was pronounced dead upon arrival at Jersey Shore University Medical Center.
