78-Year-Old Dead in Crash on Route 165

HARFORD COUNTY, MD – A fatal collision involving a passenger vehicle and a dump truck occurred in Harford County on Thursday afternoon.

Officers from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a vehicle crash on Rt. 165 near Furnace Road and Huntfield Way around 12:46 p.m.

The driver of the BMW 328i, identified as John Derwart, 78, from Fallston, was pronounced dead at the scene. The construction vehicle was driven by Scott Thommen, 54, from Delta, maneuvering around a work zone when the accident occurred.

There were no passengers in the construction vehicle. A passenger, Joan Bridges, 81, also from Fallston, was in the BMW and has been taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.

Deputies from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team have initiated an investigation into the accident.
