Shore Woman Posed as Doctor, Treated Patients but Was Not Licensed

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Maria F. Macburnie, 62, of Toms River, was arrested and charged with Practicing Medicine by an Unlicensed Person, Forgery, Health Care Claims Fraud, and three counts of Distribution of a Controlled Dangerous Substance on Tuesday.

The charges stem from an investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Economic Crime Squad and the Drug Enforcement Administration’s New Jersey Division.

Investigators found that Macburnie, under the guise of a relative who is a licensed medical practitioner, was treating patients at Shore Medical Associates in Toms River.

She had been issuing prescriptions, including controlled dangerous substances, and submitting insurance claims and bills under her relative’s name.

Macburnie was arrested without incident on Wednesday, and is currently held at the Ocean County Jail pending a detention hearing.
