Two Women Charged After Child Accidentally Shoots Toddler

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – An incident recently unfolded in Edgecombe County when a 10-year-old accidentally shot a 1-year-old.

The Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by the Nash General Hospital Police about the shooting that took place in the 100 block of River Run Road in Rocky Mount.

Upon arrival, detectives learned that the 10-year-old had accessed a firearm and accidentally injured the toddler.

The 1-year-old is currently in the hospital in stable condition. Further investigation revealed that two women residing at the location failed to secure the firearm from the children.

Tosha Mayo, 48, and Yasmin May, 26, have both been charged with storage of firearms to protect minors. Sheriff Atkinson of the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s office emphasized the importance of safe firearm storage to prevent such incidents.
