Lusby Woman Had Over 40 Rabbits in Unsanitary Conditions, Charged

CALVERT COUNTY, MD – Carol Badart VanWie, 77, from Lusby, entered a guilty plea on Monday, in the Calvert County District Court to multiple charges of animal cruelty.

Ms. VanWie had kept over 40 rabbits and other animals in poor and unsanitary conditions at her organization, Bunny Magic and Wildlife Rabbit Rescue, in Lusby.

She received a suspended jail term, probation, and is prohibited from owning animals.

Additionally, VanWie repaid Calvert County $67,000 for the animals’ care and sustenance, which were seized from her premises.

State’s Attorney Robert Harvey commended Senior Assistant State’s Attorney Christopher J. Monte for his role in this case.
