Man Charged for Fatal Hit and Run of Homeless Man in Kensington

PHILADELPHIA (August 23) — District Attorney Larry Krasner and the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office Homicide and Non-Fatal Shootings Unit have announced charges against Joseph Vannauker for the hit-and-run killing of Gabriel Leon, a 37-year-old unhoused man, in the city’s Kensington section this week.

The fatal incident occurred in the early morning hours of August 22, on the 2400 block of Castor Avenue. Leon was walking southbound across the intersection when Vannauker, engaged in street racing with another vehicle, struck Leon with his blue 2020 Dodge Charger, heading eastbound at approximately 75 miles per hour. Leon was pronounced dead at the scene. A Philadelphia police officer who was responding to reports of gunshots in the area witnessed the vehicular homicide. Additionally, an eyewitness provided dashcam video depicting Vannauker’s vehicle and another Dodge Charger traveling at a high rate of speed shortly before the incident.

Vannauker fled the scene but was taken into custody later that morning in New Jersey. He declined to speak to Philadelphia police and requested legal counsel. Vannauker is charged with Murder, Homicide by Vehicle, Simple Assault, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and related charges, and remains in custody. Bail has been set at one million dollars.

Vannauker is also awaiting a preliminary hearing for his involvement in a previous street racing incident in October 2022. The District Attorney’s Office has contacted Leon’s next-of-kin and provided information on the case and victim services.

District Attorney Krasner emphasized Vannauker’s “reckless behavior and callous disregard for the lives of others” and expressed gratitude for the investigation conducted by law enforcement. “We have the necessary evidence to prosecute this case and pursue justice for Gabriel Leon, his loved ones, and the community. Mr. Vannauker will be held accountable for his terrible crimes,” he said.
