EVESHAM, NJ – On Sunday, the Evesham Police Department responded to a report of suspected animal cruelty on the 600 block of Main Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered both living and deceased dogs in extremely poor living conditions. A juvenile residing in the home was also removed due to the unhealthy environment.
Rebecca Halbach, 35, and Brandon Leconey, 32, both homeowners, were arrested on charges of endangering the welfare of a child and animal cruelty. Leconey is currently held at the Burlington County Jail, while Halbach is being evaluated at a hospital for an unrelated medical issue. Both are pending a detention hearing at the Burlington County Superior Court.
The residence contained 14 living dogs, numerous cats, and rabbits. Officers also found more than 30 deceased dogs scattered throughout the house. Nine dogs have been taken to the Mt. Laurel Animal Hospital, with several in extremely poor health.
The New Jersey Division of Child Protection & Permanency (DCP&P) has taken custody of the removed juvenile and is investigating. Further inquiries have suggested that as many as 100 dogs may have died in the home. The search of the home continues as part of an ongoing investigation.
