Tech Support Scams Reported in Prince George’s County

PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, MD – The Financial Crimes Unit of the Prince George’s County Police Department is issuing a warning about “Tech Support Scams.”

As of this year, 13 reports of such scams have been filed, resulting in a total loss of more than $287,000 to victims within the county.

Victims of these scams typically receive a message advising that their computer has a virus. Upon giving remote access to scammers, victims are told that their financial accounts are also compromised.

Money is then stolen through various methods including cryptocurrency, gift cards, or illicit wire transfers.

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of a tech support scam is asked to call PGPD detectives at 301-516-1464.
